Russia making U.S. look good

Russia is doing their best impression of Nazi Germany who annexed Austria and Sudetenland to “protect” ethnic Germans living outside Germany.  Soon after the Nazis would roll over every country in Eastern and Western Europe as the world looked the other way.   Russia has entered Georgia to “protect its Russian citizens” living outside of Russia.  Next will come the Ukraine and Belarus and so on.   NATO and the former Soviet Eastern Block countries need to stand up to this bully and say, “NOT THIS TIME!”   Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.   Putin is acting like a madman.  Perhaps he is getting advice from Rasputin.

One benefit will be a rallying around the West (U.S.) for protection.  We will probably see every Eastern Block country drop their objection to troops and missile defense as clearly they need some sort of deterrence.  Clearly a major miscalculation on Russia’s part as long as we have the resolve to confront them with effective measures.

Jag Day

We had our first pre-season game of the year.  We lost 14-7 to Homewood.  There were some promising moments though to build on.   Manny had a big sack today.

McCain and Obama all tied up

Gallup is showing a dead heat in the election right now. It may have something to do with McCain’s new funny ads, but I think has to do with this:

When Reagan beat Mondale, my father said to me, “Nobody has ever won the Presidency by promising to raise taxes.”

Russian Roulette

It feels like Russia has lost their ever-lovin’ minds. Putin is swinging his manhood around like a schoolyard bully. I was very disappointed that our stance in the world has diminished to the point where Russia felt they could attack an ally of ours without consequence. I was encouraged this morning by the announcement of a missile defense deal between Poland and the U.S. I think deploying the defense system was the appropriate response to such ambitious aggression. Poland sees the writing on the wall. They also want assurances from the U.S. that we will respond immediately if they are attacked which I think they deserve. Whether we have the fortitude to back it up is debatable. Russia of course was angered by the move. They even threatened a nuclear strike!

“Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent,” Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of staff, was quoted as saying.

He added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia’s military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons “against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them.” Nogovitsyn that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, he said, according to Interfax.

They have also been hinting at another Cuban Missile Crisis.

What in the world are they thinking? My fear is that they are thinking we have become so soft that we will never dare confront them militarily. An even bigger fear is that they are right.

Let’s just say Russia takes out our military defense system in Poland. What are we prepared to do about it? In my mind, that is an act of war. That seems like an awful risk for Russia to take, but they certainly want the world to believe they are capable of such an act. They are probably betting that Americans will not make any lifestyle sacrifices to stand up to them. I bet we do nothing besides a stern talking to and some U.N. resolutions. Maybe kick them out of the G-8. Well that should show them. If they don’t respect President Bush, how will they respect President Obama?

Russia has once again become a major threat, bigger than Iran. We need to contain them. Where is Reagan when you need him?

McCain on a roll

McCain has been on a roll lately. Check out the latest ad.

I am a little concerned about his suggestion that a pro-choice candidate might be ok for VP. He will lose the base and damage the Republican party even further. I’m fairly sure he wouldn’t really make a mistake like that.

Well now that I think about it, in principle, I would really not approve of a pro-choice VP. However, I suppose it would depend on the candidate. I could tolerate someone like Giuliani or maybe even Lieberman as VP choice, but they would have to seriously impress me in other areas to make up for it. AND I would want assurances about strict constructionist Supreme Court Justices should they ever be put in that position.

Did you see that??

In the Men’s 4 x 100 M freestyle relay, the United States destroyed the World Record and defeated the favored France by just a blink of an eye. They broke the record they had set just one day earlier. So in the past two days, they took the World Record from 3:12.46 to 3:12.23 to an astonishing 3:08:24. The 100 M Freestyle World Record Holder Alain Bernard from France declared before the race, “The Americans? We’re going to smash them. That’s what we came here for.” Hah! Au contraire! Jason Lezak swam the fastest relay split in history to catch and beat Bernard right at the end. France had a 1/2 second lead going in to the last leg with the World Record holder Bernard going last. Choke! Actually by the time Bernard swam he had actually already lost his World Record to Eamon Sullivan of Australia during the first leg of the race. Ha Ha! You suck! That will teach you to trash talk the U.S. France, don’t you realize that you will never win anything? Ok, I’ll give you the World Cup a few years ago, but really besides that what else have you won? Actually I have more respect now for France since they elected a decent pro-American President Nicolas Sarkozy. But come on, France pretty much deserves to be picked on.

Congratulations, Michael Phelps (2 golds and counting), Garrett Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones, and Jason Lezak!

USA! USA!

Pure Sleep works

Do you snore? I snore like a freight train. I think I have sleep apnea too which probably explains why I’m always exhausted in the morning. I had a sleep study once but the results were “inconclusive”. I never bothered to have another because it’s a real pain to try in sleep in a lab with wires all over you. My father who gave me this gift had tried many ways to solve his own snoring. He had a few surgeries. He also had an ultrasound treatment to melt the tissue of his upper palette which I also had done twice. Last year, he showed me a snore-guard that his dentist had fitted for him that finally stopped his snoring. It cost him around $500. The way it works is that it moves your lower jaw slightly forward so your palette doesn’t relax down into your throat.

Maybe you’ve seen the ad on tv for the Pure Sleep device. It’s just like the device my father uses except it’s only $59.90, self fitted, and works fantastic. I don’t snore and feel completely rested in the morning. The only drawback is that it slightly and temporarily changes your bite when you first wake up. Eventually your bite comes back to normal. They tell you this in the brochure. It’s also a little tricky to fit. You have to heat it up in boiling water. I tried to use a slotted spoon but it just floated right off the spoon and down to the bottom slightly melting the edges. I don’t think it was supposed to touch the sides of the pot at all. It still seemed to work ok though. I’ll probably order another one one day and try again to get a better fit.

If you know someone who snores, I would definitely try it out.

Big thank you to Barack Obama

I hadn’t even realized my tires weren’t properly inflated until he mentioned it. He just saved me a bundle at the pump and I saved our nation from reliance on foreign oil.

Dodged a bullet

I was at my son’s football practice on Friday when a client from work called and asked me to join a conference call. I missed most of the practice but luckily did not have to do any additional work other than brainstorm on the phone call. Monday morning I got an email from the manager in charge at the client site saying I had left my phone on after I thought I had hung up! I started sweating immediately wondering what they might have heard. Apparently either I didn’t say anything inappropriate about work or they just didn’t hear it. However they did hear me yelling at yelling at my son, “Come on Manny, take him down!” He did sack the quarterback and cause a fumble. Very exciting.

Manny Ramirez traded

Manny Ramirez got his wish and was traded to the Dodgers. The Red Sox gave up Manny and top prospects Brandon Moss, and Craig Hansen and got back Jason Bay. Not only that, the Red Sox are going to pay all of Manny’s $7 million salary for the remainder of the year. Somehow I don’t think Jason Bay is worth all that.

I would just like to say once again that Scott Boras is the most evil agent on the planet. He convinced Manny to whine, complain, and go in the tank so that the Red Sox would not pick up his options for the next two years and be forced to trade him. You see Boras-shole doesn’t see a penny of Manny’s money until he signs a new contract. He basically made Manny into a villain and convinced him he was unhappy to line his own pockets. He is scum. Manny said the Red Sox tried to turn the fans against him, well he’s wrong. It was because he listened to his manipulative, evil agent.
