Upon reflection I am no longer a Republican

Well now that I’ve thanked President Bush for what he had done well, let’s talk about the things he didn’t do so well.  The biggest mistake he may have made was pushing the country into socialism with massive wasteful spending and government ownership of private institutions.  I believe the housing bubble that caused the economic collapse was not his fault and there is evidence that he had unsuccessfully tried to correct it, however his response, although quick, was panicked and dare I say un-American.   And so far it seems unsuccessful.

The consensus is that George Bush was a terrible communicator.  He was the anti-Reagan.  Quite often he would let attacks on his administration and policies go without any defense whatsoever.  I know he tried to be “above” petty politics, but with such a liberal media bias, he should not have let these attacks go unanswered.  He did not provide leadership or direction for the Republican Party which has completely lost its way.  Republicans not only lost control of Congress under his watch, they may also lose any influence at all by losing the ability to filibuster.  Too often Republicans were forced to half heartedly support a President who had very little public support.

I am no longer a Republican.  I will never, ever be a Democrat, but I cannot support a party that no longer follows its principles.   To paraphrase Ronald Reagan’s reason for leaving the Democrat Party, “I didn’t leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me.”

I am now an Independent, Pragmatic Conservative with a Libertarian streak.  Republicans,  call me when you get a spine.

  1. Scott, welcome to the third world of politics….the world of small “i” independent thinkers and voters which may now comprise about one third of voters, and which hopefully is growing larger as evidenced by your “road to Damascus” experience of “seeing the light”.

It’s taken a while for a lot of people to realize that former and now deceased Alabama Governor George Corley Wallace spoke the truth many years ago when he said there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Those words of Wallace, and the words of James Carville……”It’s the economy, stupid”, hopefully will define American politics in the future.

  2. Don, you have actually had a big influence on me in rethinking the Republican party.  Sometimes I’m too loyal for my own good.  I am tired of the partisan B.S.   You showed me that Ron Paul was right about an awful lot of things and I discounted him right away mostly because I considered him un-electable and a little kooky.  I don’t really see any party that embraces everything I believe in right now.  Republicans are theoretically close but in practice they are far, far away.  I can’t relate one bit to the Democrats.  Everything they seem to embrace has been historically proven to have failed.  I just can’t understand their way of thinking.   I like Libertarian philosophy a lot but sometimes they can be a bit too extreme and even too anti-government for me.  It might be time to go back and re-read some political philosophers again starting with Plato and Aristotle.

  3. Scott, I’ve had some issues with my PC recently plus many other matters that took up my time, so I’m reading your comment only today, Saturday the 24th.

If I’ve influenced you in the ways you described then I feel that I’ve accomplished something….not in changing your mind about anything, but in causing you to think about matters you might not have otherwise taken time to think about. That’s what I try to do.

I chose to call myself Dr. IQ on my website and if you don’t quite understand why, you may want to read about it @ http://www.doctoriq.com/whois.htm, which I just read again for the first time in a long time. I see that I have strayed from posting pages of my website in chronological order since I wrote that page. Otherwise, I think it’s still mostly accurate.
