Russian Roulette

It feels like Russia has lost their ever-lovin’ minds. Putin is swinging his manhood around like a schoolyard bully. I was very disappointed that our stance in the world has diminished to the point where Russia felt they could attack an ally of ours without consequence. I was encouraged this morning by the announcement of a missile defense deal between Poland and the U.S. I think deploying the defense system was the appropriate response to such ambitious aggression. Poland sees the writing on the wall. They also want assurances from the U.S. that we will respond immediately if they are attacked which I think they deserve. Whether we have the fortitude to back it up is debatable. Russia of course was angered by the move. They even threatened a nuclear strike!

“Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent,” Nogovitsyn, the deputy chief of staff, was quoted as saying.

He added, in clear reference to the agreement, that Russia’s military doctrine sanctions the use of nuclear weapons “against the allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them.” Nogovitsyn that would include elements of strategic deterrence systems, he said, according to Interfax.

They have also been hinting at another Cuban Missile Crisis.

What in the world are they thinking? My fear is that they are thinking we have become so soft that we will never dare confront them militarily. An even bigger fear is that they are right.

Let’s just say Russia takes out our military defense system in Poland. What are we prepared to do about it? In my mind, that is an act of war. That seems like an awful risk for Russia to take, but they certainly want the world to believe they are capable of such an act. They are probably betting that Americans will not make any lifestyle sacrifices to stand up to them. I bet we do nothing besides a stern talking to and some U.N. resolutions. Maybe kick them out of the G-8. Well that should show them. If they don’t respect President Bush, how will they respect President Obama?

Russia has once again become a major threat, bigger than Iran. We need to contain them. Where is Reagan when you need him?

They already have that assurance. Poland is a member of NATO.

Russia has once again become a major threat…

They are nowhere near the threat they were as the Soviet Union. While their actions in Georgia are certainly troubling I do not see this as a growing trend.
Where is Reagan when you need him?

And what would he be doing differently right now?  Remember, we won the Cold War by NOT going to war.

  2. Russia has become a much bigger threat in the past few years.  Their sudden wealth from oil has gone right to their heads.  They are funding and giving weapons and technology to our enemies.  They oppose everything we try to do at the U.N.  They are invading their neighbors.  They are threatening to have bases and missiles in Cuba.   I find their recent behavior quite unsettling.   I view them as a major threat because of the resources they now have. Look how they bully and extort their neighbors by cutting off their fuel supplies. Their power and influence is still 2nd in the world with China maybe a close 3rd.

Reagan is exactly the kind of leader we need.  He knew how to handle the Soviets.   He did it without firing a shot which is certainly what I would hope for, but he certainly carried a big stick and the Soviets believed he might use it if he had to  Also Reagan did not care one bit what Russia thought about SDI.  I think it might be time to isolate them again.  They don’t seem to understand the responsibilities of being a leader of free nations.  Let’s see if their people are ready to go back to the days of totalitarian rule.

  3. Btw, It was initiatives like SDI (MIssile Defense) that helped Reagan crack the Soviet Union.  I think it’s a great response.
