How do we become energy independent?

If you are like me, you don’t want another penny going to our enemies for oil. So what do we do? We could drill for more oil, natural gas, or dig for coal. These are all temporary fixes because there is a finite supply. Coal will last 250 years though. There is also the carbon emission problem. It’s not necessarily proven to be a problem for global warming, but Algore has brainwashed so many people, that many will not be satisfied with these solutions. I’m all for reducing pollution even if it won’t necessarily save the world. So as T.Boone Pickens recommends, we need a bridge until we can create the infrastructure for alternative energy. These solutions all qualify.

So what else do we move toward? Biofuels? Hydrogen? Bad ideas to me. Biofuels are grown on farms and hydrogen is created from water. I can see massive food and water shortages in our future. There will also be problems with natural disasters such as droughts, pests, floods, frosts, hurricanes, etc. Biofuels also create carbon emissions. Tree huggers should hate this.

So what is left? I say all the emphasis should be nuclear. Unlimited domestic supply and no carbon emissions. I would plug in a car to get energy. I bet car technology would advance quite rapidly to handle this. I could also embrace solar and wind enery, but I wonder how much energy we could really generate that way. Right now the cost of solar is prohibitive. I looked into for the house and it would cost at least $20,000. That’s quite a bit to invest in a home I might not live in forever.

It’s not about Al Gore. Climate scientists from around the world have made a strong case that CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels is causing the current warming trend.

I’m in favor of nuclear power as well. It’s much safer than it was even a few years ago. The only problem is figuring out where to store the spent fuel rods.

Hey…what’s up with the “Silke’s last blog post.” First of all that wasn’t even my post. Second, it’s a post from five months ago.

  3. I’m not sure.  It’s supposed to search for your feed at whatever address you put in the box.  Maybe it’s grabbing the wrong feed?

  4. But Silke, it’s such great sport to blame Big Al.  He wants all the credit, so I’m happy to give it to him.

I think the plan is to store the spent fuel at Yucca Mountain.

I’m no big fan of Al Gore myself but making fun of him doesn’t change the fact that scientists have made a strong and very serious case about what we are doing to our environment.

Regarding Yucca Mountain, my understanding is that the people who live near there don’t want it. Don’t they have a right to not live near nuclear waste?
