Alabama Democrats are still idiots - NO on SB 541

Without Don from DoctorIQ, how would I know what’s going on in Alabama? Don sent me another email showing that Judiciary Committee Chairman Senator Roger Smitherman (D-Jefferson) sponsored SB 541 which will require every round of ammunition to have a serial number laser etched upon it. A liberal gun-control idiot has done it again. Smitherson does not seem to care that the cost of such a requirement would be disastrous for the manufacturer, result in higher prices for the consumer, and that ballistics forensics can already match bullets to guns when necessary. Smitherman would like you to think that he’s just looking out for helpless victims, but clearly his agenda is to destroy the gun industry through Big Brother regulation. I’m sure his justification is how many unsolved shootings could be solved if we could just figure out who bought the bullets. Guns already have serial numbers and for some reason this does not stop crime at all.

The cost to our wallets and our liberties is far too great for such a measure. Time and time again, I will side with less regulation and more freedom unless the situation is so dire that I am willing to reasonably give up a small measure of freedom to secure my safety such as the Patriot Act. I do not feel that my liberties are so much at risk from unmarked bullets that the government needs to interfere.

  1. Scott, after I sent the email I went to ALISON and read the history of the bill yesterday. I may have some good news.

According to ALISON the bill was scheduled for its third reading on day 20 of the 2008 legislative session. Thursday, April 24, was the 24th day of the (30 day) session and I can find no record on ALISON that the bill has had its third reading thus far. Perhaps enough voters called enough senators and told them to defeat this bill and/or enough organizations that would be affected by it let their voices be heard, and when Smitherman counted votes he saw that it was useless to continue to attempt to get this bill passed in the current session.

It’s something to keep our eyes on, though, even next year and beyond. I understand that a dozen or more state legislatures are working on similar bills.

  2. What happened  to this bill?  I write the RTKB column for Alabama Outdoor  News and am working on my July column. I see that none of the pro gun bills passed.

    The Allison system is useless.\

    Thanks.

ALISON is useless for the regular session as it is set up now for the Special Session. But if you go to ALISON and first click on the button in the top left corner you will get a menu that allows you to reset it to the 2008 regular session where you can research the history of SB541 and learn that it received it’s second reading on April 10, and then after much bad publicity, Smitherman indefinately postponed further action on in on May 8. The bill died with the end of the session.
