Probably a huge mistake. I am anticipating a bunch of contradictory fluff embracing and distancing himself from Jeremiah Wright at the same time. I have a feeling this will amplify the issue instead of making it go away.
More to come….
Harris Wofford, Sen D-PA is introducting Obama and I think I’m gonna be sick. I think he might be crying. He compared Obama to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as a rare leader that arrives just in the nick of time to save us all.
Ok. Here we go.
Obama thanks Wofford for the reach around.
He’s in Philly saying that the Declaration of Independence was incomplete and stained with slavery. He points out the battle between ideals and reality which is how he bases his campaign. He chose to run for President because he believes we need to work together to perfect our country.
He is emphasizing his white heritage. He says his story would only be possible here in the U.S. We are the sum of our parts. Unity, hope change… blah blah blah…
He just played the race card. Race is an issue in the campaign. He calls out Geraldine Ferraro for her affirmative action claim.
He says Jeremiah Wright has denigrated our country and he has denounced his words. He admits to knowing and hearing of controversial remarks from his pastor even in the church.
He calls radical Islam perverted terrorism and backs our ally Israel.
Now he starts defending Pastor Wright as I predicted. Wright is more than what you see on the news. He starts listing his credentials, former marine, feeds homeless, etc. [This must somehow offset hateful anti-American rhetoric.]
He says his church embodies the black community in its entirety all its good and bad. He says he has never heard Jeremiah Wright ever denigrate any ethnic group [YEAH RIGHT!] He says he can’t disown his pastor just like he can’t disown his white racist grandmother. [I'm not quite sure why he can't disown Wright, but he just threw his grandmother under the bus]
He calls on us to not make the same mistake Rev. Wright made by amplifying and distorting the negative until it takes over.
Now he’s starting his campaign stump speech. He beseeches us to come together for health care, jobs, blah… First Applause of speech must be from liberal MSM…. Segregated schools are inferior schools. Lack of economic equality and opportunity. Lack of basic services, parks, garbage, police.
Rev. Wright has not recovered from his pain and suffering of racial injustice. There is underground anger hiding in the barber shops, beauty shops, etc. The anger shows up sometimes in church on Sunday mornings.
There is similar anger in the white community. Whites are immigrants who worked hard for everything they have and feel their dreams slipping away. They are resentful toward affirmative action for crimes they never committed. This resentment was exploited by Reagan and talk radio. [Oh boy, here we go. Unite everyone except conservatives.]
He says do not dismiss legitimate concerns of whites as racist. He still has faith that America can work together to heal racial wounds. Do not become victims of our past. Better healthcare, school, jobs, blah.
He must be getting close the end. His tempo, rhythm, volume and energy are rising. The applause is increasing.
Provide ladders of opportunity that were not previously available. Everyone can prosper.
Do unto others… Be your brother’s (sister’s) keeper…
He just mentioned the OJ trial!
He has spanked Ferraro 3 times now!
Distractions will prevent “change”.
Come together. Move on. Let it go.
Special interests in Washington are holding people back.
Immigrants good, corporations and profit bad. War bad. Pathetic applause.
Final story…. Young 23 year old white woman Ashley Somebody. Organizing and campaigning in the black community. Why? Mom got cancer lost health care. She told her mother she loved mustard and relish sandwiches to save money. She could have blamed blacks on welfare or hispanics for stealing jobs, but doesn’t. Ashley asks elderly black man why he’s there. “I am here because of Ashley.” This is where we start to come together to fix everything.
I think this story was made up.
Pretty good speech as he usually gives. Did he unite or divide? Did he help or hurt his campaign? Was it the “rhetorical end point” of the Jeremiah Wright issue?
