Is Conservatism irrelevant?

Today Sean Hannity is declaring that the Conservative movement has fallen behind the times and must modernize the message to be relevant again. He points to the movement toward McCain as a candidate over more conservative candidates. He is worried conservatives will become a marginalized fringe group by opposing such issues as global warming, closing Gitmo, open borders, etc that apparently most of the country believes in. He says McCain is ahead of the curve and we need to catch up with him and open our minds.

Hannity has un-Hannitized himself. A 12 year old girl is asking him if he’s completely insane or is he joking. I think he’s gone off the deep end. I had to check the calendar to see if it’s April 1st. It turns out that he was actually joking to make a point. However it does ask an important question about what is happening to conservatism. I have been puzzled for weeks about the appeal of McCain and Huckabee in Republican primaries.

My position is that the world will not end if McCain becomes President. He is strong on terror and will hold the line on spending. These are my two most important issues. However, seeing the country move to the left this election season concerns me. Perhaps both sides are moving toward the middle instead. All voters have gotten sick and tired of the partisan bickering and candidates like McCain and Obama who preach “why can’t we all just get along” are doing well. I do worry that the conservative message seems to have lost its luster. Voices like Rush Limbaugh have had very little impact on the Republican primaries so far.

I’d like to think that McCain’s success is due to:

1. An organization and name recognition built up over past Presidential races.
2. Sympathy for a former prisoner of war.
3. Sympathy that he is old and this is his last chance to become President.
4. The media’s influence and desire that John “Hillary” McCain win and that any conservative lose.
5. McCain’s competition are all flawed as well.

In my view, Romney has been gaining a lot of momentum recently and almost overtook McCain in Florida. I believe Romney will shine in the true Red States on Super Tuesday. I can’t believe that conservative values have suddenly lost their appeal. I can’t see Republicans ultimately nominating someone who constantly pokes Republicans in the eye and who is best friends with Bill and Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy.

Romney needs to get Hucakbee to drop out of the race somehow.
