The boy and I went to his year end football party and when we got home his three year old sister said, “Why do you have a trophy? You didn’t win anything.” Well said. We all had to laugh at that one.
In fact his football team was 0-8 for the 2nd year in a row. The trophies seem to get bigger the more he loses. When I was a boy (this is where I sound like my father) , I only won trophies when we won the championship. In my lifetime of playing soccer, I got one trophy when I was ten and we earned it because we never lost a game. I am very proud of that trophy.
Now our kids get trophies for “participation”. Wow. Just for showing up. That’s quite an achievement. No wonder our kids are falling behind the rest of the world.
Our kids must really be fired up to get another trophy next year. They don’t need to win a single game either.
Let me just say that my son completely agrees with me too. He thinks it is ridiculous to have a bedroom full of meaningless trophies.
