The Patriots broke the rules, they got caught, and they payed a huge price. The Patriots are still my team. I’m a bit disappointed that Belichick was not smart enough to realize that a blatant disregard for the rules would have such a big impact. Trying to steal the other team’s signals is a part of competition. If the Patriots had a pair of binoculars, pen, and paper to capture the same information, there would have been no problem. I still have trouble seeing how they could have videotaped the competition and had it analyzed in time to be useful within the same game. Belichick claims they never used the video to gain an advantage during the same game but he has some credibility issues right now. If it was used for future contests, you can probably see those signals right on television or on official game tape. I would strongly like to point out that the tape was seized in the first quarter of the game against the Jets and any information that could have been gained was not used to decide the outcome which is why the Patriots did not need to forfeit that game. The Jets were soundly beaten by a better team.
But these are the Patriots and they are supposed to be the good guys. That’s why this stinks. It’s my team that’s getting torn apart in the press. This is supposed to happen to teams like the Yankees, not my team.
I have said just this week in other postings that America loves to cheer when the successful fail because it brings them down to our level. It’s the Jerry Springer syndrome. We love to see those toothless inbreds fight on tv because it makes us feel better about ourselves. We love to hear that Barry Bonds cheated to break the record because then we could have broken the record too if we had cheated as well. We love to hear when Olympic sprinters get caught because nobody should be that fast. Some people spend their every waking moment trying to figure out how to prove Lance Armstrong cheated because it is almost inhuman to win the Tour de France that many times missing a testicle. We love to hear that Lindsay Lohan is addicted to drugs because she is far too good looking and talented to deserve all that success. We love to hear that Britney shaved her head, lost her husband, and may lose her children because that makes her more crazy than us. Then we can say to ourselves, “See? Good thing we’re not famous and don’t have any money.”
And now of course the Eagles can say, “See maybe we didn’t really suck in the Superbowl!” (Yes they did)
I am willing to forgive my team because I believe their success had very little to do with this incident and far more to do with the hard work, team work, clutch last minute drives by Tom Brady and clutch kicking by Adam Vinatieri. The best way for Bill Belichick to put this all behind him would be to win a Superbowl anyways. For years the Patriots always had something to prove to get them motivated to be the best. Once again they are challenged to show their detractors that it’s the team that wins and this lapse in judgement.
