Jets live in glass house

It appears the holier-than-thou New York Jets also think the rules do not apply to them. The team that ratted out the Patriots have been accused of illegally calling out snap counts on defense to cause the other team to jump offside.

This time it’s the Jets who are being accused of cheating.

Ravens coach Brian Billick yesterday accused New York of using an “illegal” ploy to draw Baltimore offside during Sunday’s game.

Billick said the Jets’ defense shouted out signals to intentionally throw off the Baltimore offense. The coach claimed the tactic led to the three illegal procedure penalties against the Ravens.

“They did an outstanding job. I credit the New York Jets. Their defensive line and linebackers did a very, very effective job of illegally simulating the snap count,” Billick said. “They did it the whole game long. It needs to be caught.”

Tackle Adam Terry bolted offside in the first and third quarters. Tight end Quinn Sypniewski jumped in the first quarter.

“That’s not an excuse by any stretch of the imagination. But it is illegal,” Billick said. “Our guys have to deal with it. I don’t know how to help my linemen with that because, you’re in the heat of battle and you’re calling the snap count, and the guy across from you is also calling a snap count – which is illegal.”

My, my, my… well I certainly hope this rule infringement will be thoroughly investigated and heavily penalized. This sort of cheating should not be tolerated by such an “upstanding” organization. To make matters even worse, the Jets lost despite their cheatin’ ways.

Goodell better be careful. It’s not going to be easy maintaining the integrity of the game without tarnishing the image of the entire NFL.  He should be careful which closets he decides to open up. There may be no teams left with any first round draft picks. I would care less about past infringements if I were him and worry more about how teams behave going forward.
