Idol gives back

I really enjoyed tonight’s show. It was very moving and tastfully done which was not an easy accomplishment for a cheesy talent competition. The Elvis/Celine duet was amazing to watch. I wish I knew how they got all those camera angles on Elvis. There was a bit too much Teri Hatcher who is a bit past her prime now. Who knew David Schwimmer could dance like that! Oh and how can I forget the Simpson’s Idol parody. That was hysterical.

The producers were a bit cruel to Jordin Sparks at the end to make her think she was eliminated, even if just for a few seconds. Ryan Seacrest lost a few points there. I don’t think they thought that one through very well. She’s very young and very sensitive.

My new rankings:

Melinda Doolittle – She deserves to win based on her clearly superior voice and consistently great performances. Her recently improved looks and confident demeanor should help too.

Jordin Sparks – Jordin has got the complete Idol package. Looks, personality, and voice all measure up. At times she comes off as a bit over rehearsed in her stage presence, but she lets her guard down often enough that you feel like you still get to know what she’s really like. Even though Melinda is technically a better singer, I find myself rooting for Jordin and enjoying her emotion when she sings.

Blake Lewis – He’s very unique. I like that about him. That’s what put Taylor Hicks over the top last year. I feel like I would be most interested in seeing what sort of music he would make. I feel like Melinda and Jordin would make just another typical pop album, but Blake could really make something interesting. He’s got to bring back the beat box and dance moves if he wants to get into the finals. His voice is good by itself, by it’s not quite at the level of Melinda, Jordin, and Lakisha.

Lakisha – She’s slipped a little recently. I didn’t agree with the judges that she was shouting again this week. I think they have singled her out for criticism so she won’t go much further. I did think her rendition of Fantasia’s song was a little disappointing in that Fantasia’s version is actually better. I was really expecting Lakisha to nail this one. Fantasia is one who I think shouts and shrieks instead of singing. It was a bad sign that she couldn’t outsing Fantasia.

Phil Stacey – His voice and confidence have really improved in the last few weeks. The bald head is very distracting. It’s hard to concentrate on his voice when all you can think about is how white guys should not be Michael Jordan bald unless they have a goatee and ride a Harley. His problem will be that his looks and personality have not improved. DialIdol has him ranked highly this week which I find confusing. He must live in an area with a strong Cingular Wireless base.

Chris Richardson – The judges loved him this week. I still don’t. I still think his style is boring. I would not be interested in any album he makes. He’s the next to go.
