ICAAN blocks .xxx domains

Fox News reports that ICAAN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has rejected the proposal for assigning .xxx domain names for adult sites.

Personally I thought it was a good idea. Adult/porn web sites are never going away. They are too easy to accidentally stumble across. I would like to get them out of the mainstream and on their own island so I can better regulate what my children have access to. If both religious groups and porn sites are opposed to it, then it’s probably a good idea.

The board members that rejected the plan said they were worried that they would be put in the content management business. Isn’t that the purpose of .com (commerce) .edu (education) .gov (government) .org (non profit) .net (internet) .tv (television) .us (United States) etc…? If they are not trying to categorize web sites then why not just call them some random name like “.nothing” or “.alsdkfhakljfh” ?
