The mayor of Katowice, Poland, our great ally, is replacing a monument dedicated to the Soviet Troops that drove out the Nazi’s with a statue of Ronald Reagan calling the site Ronald Reagan Freedom Square. Warsaw is planning a similar Reagan monument.
Reagan, who dubbed the Soviet Union an “evil empire,” is widely credited by Poles with having driven communism to the wall.
The people of Poland, having only recently tasted freedom, appreciate it far more than some Americans do. We are the beacon of freedom in the world and we should be proud of that, not ashamed. We certainly shouldn’t apologize for bringing freedom to people around the world. The people of the former Soviet Union are grateful, the people of Bosnia are grateful, the people of Afghanistan are grateful, and I’m sure the people who participated in the Iraqi elections are grateful.
You can’t give up on the fight for freedom because it is costly or difficult. Maybe strategies need to change, but NEVER give in to the forces of oppression. You must take on evil, without any reservations or your hands tied behind your back. Make no mistake about it, communism, despotism, and terrorism are evil and threaten our way of life. Imagine if Ronald Reagan had not taken on communism. What would the world look like today?
Freedom is a right our forefathers had to die for to secure for us. They certainly weren’t able to obtain it through diplomacy and understanding. All people have the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, not just the fortunate ones born in the U.S. All people yearn to be free and we must defend this principle if our enemies are halfway around the world or even in our own government.
Ronald Reagan understood this, do you?
