Mike Buday and his wife Diana Bijon have enlisted the ACLU to sue the State of California because it is too difficult for Buday to take his wife’s last name when they married in 2005. They feel it violates the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause since it is very simple for a woman to change her last name when she marries. In California, a man who wants to take his wife’s name must file a petition, pay more than $300, place a public notice for weeks in a local newspaper and then appear before a judge.
“Diana and I feel strongly about gender equality for both men and women,” Buday said. “I think the most important thing in all of this is to bring it to a new level of awareness.”Mark Rosenbaum, legal director of the ACLU in Southern California, said it is the first federal lawsuit of its kind in the country. “It’s the perfect marriage application for the 17th century,” Rosenbaum said. “It belongs in the same trash can as dowries.”
Oh brother. Buday does not sound like a name that needs to be changed to prevent their children from being maliciously teased. To me that’s really the only reason a man should change his name at all and, MAYBE, take his wife’s name. I’ve known many women who refuse to take their husband’s name as a matter of principle. Some will at least hyphenate. I sort of understand this thinking, but I don’t agree with it. I’m a traditional person and I believe a wife taking her husband’s name creates a stronger marriage bond when two people share a name. I think if you marry a woman who won’t take your name or wants separate bank accounts, or some other similar nonsense, you better keep a divorce lawyer on retainer. Just start putting half of your income in a separate bank account called Alimony. However, taking your wife’s name for no reason other than she is the alpha male of the family is just being a plain old pansy. This is another example what’s wrong with our society. Men are just not men any more.
I’m not surprised that Diana Bijon is wearing pants in the above photo, but I am surprised Buday doesn’t wear a skirt. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Mike Buday also promised to go through labor for his wife too, just to make it fair. I wonder how they’ll conceive though with his manhood kept in a jar in his wife’s closet.
