Did Bush make North Korea go nuclear?

The latest liberal assault is to blame George Bush for allowing North Korea to build a nuclear weapon. This follows their strategy of throwing as many baseless accusations as they can against the wall and seeing which ones stick. They seem to be saying that labeling them part of the Axis of Evil somehow provoked Kim Jong-il. Let’s look at the facts.

The Clinton administration gave Kim Jong-il the money, the technology, and the fuel to create their weapons. Bush didn’t. Bush didn’t give them the Michael Jordan basketball either. In exchange, North Korea promised to not pursue nuclear weapons. The Bush administration discovered they had been violating the agreement. Clinton didn’t. To me it is apparent that the North Koreans had never any intention of keeping their word. They probably starting violating it as Madeleine Albright taxied down the runway. Why we thought their word was good enough is perplexing. The Bush administration started six party talks to try and bring the rogue nation back in line. They have been pursuing all diplomatic options that do not include further appeasement. He now is close to getting a consensus from the U.N. Security Council on some punitive sanctions. I would much rather support President Bush’s approach. I really don’t see how he is possibly at fault. I’m confident that reasonable people can see through the shreiking and finger pointing.

Update:
Although I indicated that the U.N. was close to agreeing on punitive sanctions, it appears once again that China is going to obstruct this effort. Perhaps China should be in the Axis of Evil since they prop up all of our enemies. I don’t see how any President, Democrat or Republican, could be effective through diplomatic channels in a world where China, France, and Russia are ready to oppose any position we take. How about some sanctions against China instead? I wonder how quickly their position would change if we stopped buying the sneakers, underwear, and McDonald’s toys that their child sweat shops make.
