Super Papi!

On June 6, 2006, just a few weeks ago, I asked,
“How does he do it?”

It was the 10th regular-season, game-ending hit of Ortiz’s career and the third in Boston’s last eight home games. He also had three in the 2004 postseason en route to Boston’s first World Series title in 86 years.

Make it 11. He did it again last night with a 3 run walk-off homerun against Cleveland. This is all made possible by Manny Ramirez being on-deck. What’s the pitcher going to do? Walk Ortiz and pitch to Manny with the bases loaded? Ramirez and Ortiz had already hit homeruns earlier in the game.

To quote Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe,

“This simply does not happen in baseball. Ortiz has turned major league baseball into Wiffle ball games you’d play with makeshift rules regarding rooftops, clotheslines, and summer winds. Big Papi is an action superhero come to life. He is a cartoon figure who jumps off the screen and gets it done in real life in real time. He is the mythical Joe Hardy with no apparent time limit on his powers.”

We are watching the creation of a baseball legend of mythical proportions. It’s a great time to be part of Red Sox Nation.
