One penny = one percent

Jeff at Politics in Alabama is reporting that the “one cent” sales tax in Jefferson County may be repealed. It looks like the school systems which were supposed to benefit from the increase won’t see any of that money.

It really angers me that county politicians were deceptive enough to get this tax implemented in the first place. A penny sure sounds better than a one percent increase. I’m sure some people were surprised when the sales tax went up from 8% to 9%. “I thought it was just a penny.” This is ridiculously high. As history has shown, the lower the tax, the higher the revenue. This is very embarassing for such a conservative state. I wonder if any lessons will be learned this weekend when Alabama has a back-to-school tax free weekend implemented by Governor Riley.

Update:
I just found out that Shelby County is waiving their 1 percent tax for the tax-free weekend, but Jefferson County is only waiving 1 of their 2 percent tax.
