Great game tonight. Damon returned to Fenway. He got booed and went 0-4. Mirabelli came back, caught Wake, no passed balls, and threw out a runner stealing. Big Papi hit a game winning homerun, again. Sox win 7-3.
Johnny Damon did everything he could in advance of the game to try and not get booed. He professed his love for the fans constantly this week, but of course it didn’t help. Johnny, look, everything you did for the Sox was great, but look at your friggin’ uniform! If you wanted eternal love, you should have stayed or gone to any of the other teams in the major leagues. Even Pedro didn’t go to the Yankees. I heard the fans in center field threw money at him. That is hysterical!
The final nail in Johnny’s coffin:
“There’s no way I can go play for the Yankees, but I know they’re going to come after me hard. It’s definitely not the most important thing to go out there for the top dollar, which the Yankees are going to offer me. It’s not what I need.”
And after signing with the Yankees:
“I tried to come back.”
Sox offered you $10 million/year for 4 years. I’m pretty sure you weren’t going to starve and nothing prevented you from accepting that decent offer except for maybe The Devil Agent, Scott Boras. Since the Yankees offered you $13 million, I guess your soul is worth $3 million. You can’t B.S. Boston fans. You are a sellout. And Coco’s bettah.
Update:
After the game Johnny Damon said he understood fans were booing the uniform and not the person. I think he gets it. I would also like to admonish the media for thinking they can manipulate the fans into doing their bidding. I think the media is losing touch with the fan base. They clearly do not understand the fans if they were expecting a standing ovation for a Yankee. This was a big betrayal to fans. Of course when he retires, I think that will be a different story just as we gave a standing ovation to Roger Clemens in his first retirement. All will be forgiven. And in the chance that he makes the Hall of Fame, fans would want him to wear a Sox cap.
