Cingular Wireless decides the Idol winner

Two of my three favorite Idols made it into the finals. My wife’s new boyfriend, local Birmingham boy Taylor Hicks, and my new girlfriend, Katharine McPhee. I really thought my other favorite Chris Daughtry had the contest won but apparently his fans are not Cingular subscribers. My theory has always been that if the phones lines are jammed solid for all the contestants for 2 hours straight, how can there be any statistical difference between the number of votes received? That was pretty apparent in last night’s results. Then it was pointed out that Cingular text messaging may be the reason for one contestant to edge out another. I’m not sure if the Cingular text message queue can get clogged like a phone line but apparently this is where the difference comes from. Today on a local morning radio show, Rick and Bubba, a member of the Taylor Hicks Soul Patrol was on and announced that she had started a cell phone bank for those who did not have Cingular service but wanted to vote for Taylor. She has a bunch of pre-paid cell phones with text templates already set-up with the word Vote on it. It seems a bit extreme and obsessive to resort to these tactics to see your favorite win. In my house, there won’t be any voting since our vote is split. In the past we have always agreed and only voted by phone in the finals. It won’t bother me if either one wins. I really enjoyed this season. The talent seemed much better than past years, and anyone in the top four could have won it
