Namibia - Wealthy and Impoverished

I was reading this article about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt considering a Namibian name for their child. They are currently staying in Namibia. I found these paragraphs very interesting:

“Namibia, a country half the size of Alaska, is rich in diamonds and strategic metals and home to 1.8 million people. It gained independence from neighboring South Africa in 1990 after a 23-year war and has since been ruled by a democratically elected government.
Namibia suffers from deep poverty and perennial food shortages but is a popular destination for South Africans for its brilliant scenery and teeming wildlife.”

How unfortunate it is that a country can be rich in diamonds and strategic metals in one paragraph and can suffer from deep poverty and food shortages in the next paragraph. With only 1.8 million people, they should all be prosperous. Don’t forget about the money from the tourism industry either. It’s too bad Brangelina can’t do anything about the Namibian economy.
