George Clooney likens his dissent to patriotism. He gets one thing right in his blog,
We can’t demand freedom of speech then turn around and say, But please don’t say bad things about us. You gotta be a grown up and take your hits.
I am a liberal. Fire away.
Freedom of speech entitles you to speak your mind, but you have to be prepared for and accept a backlash if you make outrageous statements.
Clooney tries to embrace the “Liberal” label instead of running from it and criticizes other Liberals of being cowardly. Well there is a reason they are afraid of the “Liberal” label. Liberal social, economic, and international policies have consistently failed. Clooney tries to hang his hat on the Civil Rights successes of the sixties, but that’s about all they have to be proud of in recent history. Since then, their attempts at improving society have resulted in greater dependence and less achievement.
His entire piece does nothing to improve society. He lashes out at everyone including fellow liberals while using profanity. Perhaps he’s trying to sound like a bully. Dissent should have a purpose and be constructive, not destructive. If the point of being a liberal is to merely criticize everything your opponents do, then they should run far and fast from that label.
