Today I was listening to Laura Ingraham and the discussion was about whether there was a valid comparison between the civil rights movement and the pro-immigrant movement. Some black American leaders were “offended” by the comparison. I just can’t understand how easily people are “offended” these days. It seems very contrived. It seriously distracts from the issues being discussed. It’s almost like emotional blackmail or bullying. As a nation we are turning into a big bunch of cry-babies. “You can’t say that! That hurts my feelings!” We’re so afraid of political correctness from the Thought Police that it stops us in our tracks and we end up spending all our time discussing whether we should have said that particular phrase. Instead, we should be saying, “Grow up and act like an adult. Let’s have a discussion without everybody getting bent out of shape for choosing the wrong word or phrase.” It’s no wonder nothing gets accomplished anymore and the world perceives that we are weak.
Can you believe I actually sat here for a few seconds wondering whether it would be considered offensive if I didn’t capitalize the “B” in black Americans? It’s not a slight, I’m just not sure of the proper grammar so I picked the one that looked best. No “offense”, ok?
See how easily the discussion veered off course because of political correctness? Ok, back to the immigration argument.
The pro argument was that blacks in America were considered criminals for breaking the law by drinking from the white water fountain, not giving up a seat on the bus, etc. Now the argument is that Latinos are being treated like criminals in the same fashion. I thought there might be something to that argument until it occurred to me that the black Americans were already U.S. citizens but were not afforded the same legal rights as other citizens. Illegal immigrants are not citizens and do not automatically enjoy the same protections as everyone else.
As you probably know, my wife and her son are immigrants from Colombia. I have no problem with people wanting a better life for their children. I don’t think people in this country can relate to not being able to feed and clothe their families. Personally, I do not see Latinos as a drain on our resources. Quite the contrary, I don’t believe the US would function well without them. My biggest fear about the open border is that Islamic terrorists will exploit this.
Look, there are millions and millions of illegal immigrants in this country, mostly Latin. It is already illegal to enter without proper authority. Making it a felony to live here is not going to help the situation. There is no way we can imprison or deport every illegal alien in the country. We can’t even keep them out, let alone find them.
Solutions:
So I was thinking about what to do with all these immigrants. They desperately want to become citizens and honestly the U.S. needs them and can’t realistically get rid of them. The Latin women are hot anyways and should stick around. Making it a felony will not stop the influx. There is no deterrent when you are starving or have a dream for a better life. I like the idea of an amnesty program bundled with fines and background checks, but it must be coupled with an impenetrable fence at the border. And don’t forget Canada’s border as well. That’s a great jobs program for immigrants right there!
Then I had a novel idea. Let’s just make everybody in the entire world a US Citizen automatically. Basically just throw our hands up in the air and give in. Then I realized the Chinese would dominate every election. That wouldn’t work. Hmmmm.
How about this? Once the wall is up, pass a law that anyone who can get their foot on our soil is automatically an American citizen. Everybody. Including tourists. What a way to increase tourism and the economy! However, the border walls would be heavily patrolled and non-lethal weapons would be mounted on the wall and on satellites. They would be remotely operated by teenagers via XBox 360. If you can get in, you can stay.
I just had another great idea! Let’s just charge for citizenship. Send a check for say $10,000 per person and you’re in. You can play with the amount to control how many people flow into the country each year. I’m sure I can receive a tax cut with all this extra revenue.
I’m all about win-win.
On second thought, it’s probably hard to come up with $10,000 when you don’t have enough money to eat. This sure is difficult to solve. We have to control the flow of who comes in the country but we need to do something about everyone who is here already. The guest worker program seems like a good idea but you can’t seriously believe the immigrants will leave when their work visa expires. I say if they have held a job, paid taxes, and stayed out of trouble, they can stay. Sort of like a probation period.
I did read another blog that suggested Mexico become the 51st state. There is so much corruption in Mexican politics and the policia, that they are nowhere near ready to protect and defend our Constitution.
On a serious note, politicians better start getting smart because Latinos are the largest LEGAL minority in the country right now. That is a lot of votes. I would not alienate this population.
