Ambassador Blasts Bruce Willis’ Comments

FOXNews.com - Foxlife: Entertainment and Lifestyle News - ambassador Blasts Bruce Willis’ Comments

At a recent press conference, Bruce Willis said the United States should consider

“going to Colombia and doing whatever it takes to end the cocaine trade.”

Apparently the Colombian Ambassador Pastrana, a former President, and current President Uribe were quite offended by the actor’s comments. They pointed out that

Every year, he said, thousands of innocent civilians are killed as a result of anti-drug efforts.

Inviting Willis to visit Colombia, Pastrana said “if you accept, you will see that, beyond Hollywood cliches, 44 million Colombians are waging a real war against drugs.”

Since I am married to a Colombian woman, I know the citizens of Colombia are deeply opposed to the narco-terrorism in their country. And they are upset that drugs is the first thing people associate with their country. Yes, it is true that Colombia is waging a war against the cocaine traffickers and they receive billions in US funds to help support that fight. The only thing I disagree with is that Colombia refuses to let the US military help. This is where Bruce Willis could have made his case. They want our money but not our man-power and expertise. Instead it appeared as though he wanted to invade Colombia which I’m sure is not what he intended.

The Colombian government blamed the demand in the US for the existence of the cocaine trade. This is somewhat true, but in reality, it is the profits which drive the cocaine trade. It is impossible to stop the demand as long an affordable supply exists. The addictive nature of the drug keeps the demand constant or increasing. The effort needs to be placed on the supply side. If the costs are prohibitive, production will cease. As supply dries up, the product prices will be too high to afford and the demand will dry up or shift to alternatives.

Colombia has much more to offer than drugs. Besides the culture, music, and tropical locale, I have to say that their women are the most beautiful in the world. I learned this by watching spanish television with my wife. The most beautiful women were ALWAYS from Colombia.
