Review - Dora the Explorer Pirate Adventure

We took Duppy to the Dora show last night at the BJCC. Before we got there I was convinced my two year old daughter was the biggest Dora fan in the world. There was a lot of competition last night but I still think she holds a slight edge. She thinks Dora belongs to her and was a little disturbed that other children had Dora dolls, clothes, etc.

The show was a bit amateurish. I think most college theater groups could have done better. The sets and effects were pretty lame except the ship. The choreography was simply skipping and twirling around the stage. The audio was low and difficult to hear. The casting was terrible. “The Map” was played by a woman. That’s just not right. I was expecting The Map to sound like he does in the show, a man with a whiny NY accent. Boots was a man of questionable preference who was much taller than Dora with a deep voice. Not very monkey-like. Boots is supposed to be an innocent child. I thought Dora did a good job though even though my wife thought she was not dark enough to look Latin. The Spanish accents were pretty bad.

That being said, it doesn’t really matter what I thought. It only matters what children under 6 thought. My daughter loved it, of course, and that’s what was important. If she could talk coherently, I think she would say it was too short and didn’t like the intermission which occurred after 30 minutes. She was sad to leave the Concert Hall. She did get some lovely parting gifts though. Sadly, I think she is too young to be able to remember this later in life.
